Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman in The Fountain.
Darren Aronofsky's
The Fountain wins the award hands down for the most bizarre movie to be released in theaters in 2006. I saw an advance screening of this trippy film in July and I've been patiently waiting for a chance to see it again - just to try and figure out what the heck the film's all about.
I can guarantee there will be no middle-of-the-road reviews of Aronofsky's film. You're either going to fall madly in love with Aronofsky's romantic story involving a couple fated to be together for eternity or hate it with a passion. Either way, critics and regular moviegoers are bound to react with strong emotions to this bizarre tale of undying love.
Delayed from a 2005 release date and then bumped around a couple of times before settling for November 2006, The Fountain is not an easy film to sum up in just a few sentences. Nor do I believe a short and sweet synopsis does justice to Aronofsky's latest work. That said, here's the shortest preview I could come up with:
The Fountain begins in 16th century Spain with a conquistador named Tomas searching for the Fountain of Youth. Flash-forward to contemporary times where the same man, now known as top-notch research scientist Tommy Creo, is desperately seeking the cure for his wife's cancer. Flash way forward in time to the 26th century when our hero, Tom, is now an astronaut, still earnestly struggling to grasp the many mysteries of life. Traveling backwards, forwards, and maybe even sideways through time - The Fountain follows Tomas/Tommy/Tom as he fights throughout eternity to save the woman he loves.
The Fountain hopes to amaze audiences on November 22, 2006.
