The photo of American servicemen raising the flag on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima during Word War II is one of the most recognizable war photos of all time. Academy Award-winning director Clint Eastwood (
Million Dollar Baby,
Unforgiven) brings the story surrounding the photo to life in the film,
Flags of Our Fathers, starring Ryan Phillippe, Jesse Bradford, Adam Beach, Jamie Bell, Barry Pepper, and John Benjamin Hickey.
The Clint Eastwood film is based on the novel by James Bradley (with Ron Powers). Bradley's book follows the men depicted in the photo, none of which understood at the time how the picture would affect their lives or America's view of the war. Of the five Marines and one Navy corpsman shown in the photo, only three survived WWII. Bradley's book and the film intimately examine the lives of the three men who returned to the United States reluctant heroes.
Not satisfied to tell just one story about the Battle of Iwo Jima, Eastwood concurrently produced and directed Letters from Iwo Jima. Letters from Iwo Jima, a partner piece that looks at the events from the Japanese point of view, will hit theaters in December 2006.
Flags of Our Fathers marches into theaters on October 20, 2006.
