Mia Kirshner as Betty Ann Short aka The Black Dahlia.
On January 15, 1947, Elizabeth Short - aka The Black Dahlia - was found cut in half, internal organs missing, her mouth slashed into a grotesque, elongated smile that traveled from ear to ear. Immediately following the discovery of her mutilated body, the Los Angeles Police Department dedicated hundreds of officers to solving the crime. While 50+ people have confessed over the years and dozens of real suspects have been thoroughly investigated, the case remains one of the most baffling unsolved murders in Hollywood's history.
Short's murder has been the subject of numerous books including The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. Author Ellroy's been actively participating in all the pre-release publicity for the film, which isn't the norm for novelists when it comes to big screen adaptations of their work. Ellroy's so into the movie version that he wrote a new 'Afterward' to be included in reprints of his novel. In the new section, Ellroy discusses with enthusiasm the Brian De Palma film, Josh Hartnett, and the rest of the Black Dahlia cast. Now, that doesn't necessarily guarantee a good movie, but it's always a plus when the person responsible for the source material backs the film version.
The Black Dahlia hits theaters on September 15, 2006.
