Brad Pitt in Babel.
Babel was nominated for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival and the film won Best Director honors for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Although any movie teaming up Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Gael Garcia Bernal with director Gonzalez Inarritu wouldn't exactly sneak into theaters, the interest in Babel escalated after the film's success at Cannes. Winning a major award at the respected festival doesn't guarantee future success, but no one can deny it's certainly helping to drive interest in Babel's theatrical release.

Discussing the film's story at a press conference in Cannes, director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu said, "Babel, we think about man building this tower and trying to arrive to the sky and be gods. And then God got angry and he created these different languages. And that's the reason we are talking so many languages all over the world. For me that's not the problem, I think that language can be very easy to break. For me, I think the problem is the ideas and preconceptions that we have that really keep us apart. That's what the film's about. And at the same time, I want this film to be basically about what separates us and what brings us together. I think that's the key element: What makes us the same people living in the world and not what are our differences. Which ones are the similarities and I hope this film communicates that."

That quote from Gonzalez Inarritu cleared everything right up, didn't it? No? Try this synopsis: An accident involving an American couple in Morocco sets off a chain of events involving four families in different countries.

Babel enters theaters on a limited basis November 10, 2006.
